AN EXAMINATION OF THE CENTRAL CONFLICTS IN CLASSICAL ATHENS AND THEIR REPRESENTATION IN CONTEMPORARY GREEK TRAGEDY AND COMEDY. 

課程目標
THIS COURSE INTRODUCES: A) TEXTS OF THREE OF THE MAJOR ATHENIAN DRAMATISTS; B) THE SOCIAL, HISTORICAL, AND POLITICAL CONTEXTS IN WHICH THESE DRAMAS WERE PRODUCED; C) MAJOR ISSUES IN CURRENT SCHOLARSHIP ON ANCIENT GREEK DRAMA AND DEMOCRACY.

ACTIVE CLASS PARTICIPATION IN DISCUSSION, ORAL PRESENTATIONS, AND PERFORMANCES; SHORT PAPERS, TERM PAPER, MIDTERM AND FINAL EXAMINATION.

Class discussion, presentations, performances 
15% 
Discussion, presentations, performances Preparation and participation are mandatory and will significantly affect your performance in this class. Assigned readings must be completed before coming to class. You will be required to prepare material carefully for each class and to engage actively with work in the classroom. All students will take part in oral presentations and performances of primary texts over the course of the semester. Graduate students will present some of the scholarly articles included in the coursepack. You will be allowed one unexcused absence and one day on which to say “I’m not prepared” over the course of the semester. A failure to prepare or contribute will lower your grade. You will lose 2% of your final grade for each absence beyond the first. Please turn off cell phones in the classroom.

Written assignments There will be three written assignments during the semester, some of which may be based on in-class activities. In-class exercises are part of these assignments. You must attend class on the day you submit your paper and participate in the related exercise in order to receive full credit for it.

Midterm and final examination The midterm and final examination will cover material presented in class and readings. You may not consult books or notes during tests or examinations. Cheating and dishonesty are strictly forbidden. Makeups of missed examinations will not be permitted unless you make arrangements with me in advance.
